1. Term Insurance — by far the most popular and most purchased. You buy it for a specific period (most commonly 10, 20, or 30 years) and your premiums are guaranteed not to increase during that time. Term delivers the highest death benefit for the lowest cost — which is why most families start here. The trade-off: it isn't a long-term solution for coverage into your 70s and 80s. Helpful tip: many term policies can be converted to a permanent policy without a medical exam while the term is still active.
2. Permanent Insurance — this is the policy you buy when you want a guarantee it will be in force when you die, no expiration date. Think of it like buying a home instead of renting: the payment is higher, but you build equity. In a policy, that equity is called cash value — it accumulates tax-deferred and works best as long-term savings (surrender charges can apply if you cash out within roughly 15 years). Consider permanent coverage once you own your home, have an emergency fund, are saving for retirement, and have healthy discretionary income each month.
The winning play for many families: term for most of your coverage needs now, adding permanent insurance as your cash flow strengthens.
Cash needs are the lump sums due at death: funeral expenses, debt repayment, college funds for each child, mortgage payoff, and possible childcare while the surviving spouse works. The death benefit protects your family from carrying those burdens.
Income needs are about the standard of living you want to leave your heirs. We look at every income source available — earned income, Social Security, trust or rental income — calculate the shortfall, and factor in interest rates and inflation to find the lump sum that produces the income your family would need.
Cash needs + income needs = your custom-designed coverage figure. Our Financial Coaches calculate exactly how much you need, what type fits best, and why — and can do it in a virtual meeting at your request.
Own a business? Life insurance keeps it thriving too: it lets a surviving partner buy out the other's share without borrowing, locks in a fair value so there are no disputes, and helps retain key employees.
Ownership of life insurance gives a certain comfort — knowing your family's financial future is solid and secure even if you're not there to provide it. Wouldn't you like to feel that way?
